In case anyone is interested, this problem is solved. See if installing this chipset driver from Intel fixes the problem. They have been installed automatically and the issue is diappeared from the moment. What works in many cases is to delete the USB stuff in Device Manager then reboot, Windows will load generic drivers that usually work. Repeat this process 2 or 3 times until you see the Preparing Automatic Repair screen. The two specific devices that are coming up with an error in Device Manager are as follows.

The issue is absolutely repeatable and at this stage unresolved. I feel dreadful about my minor mistakes that caused all this to happen!

Information and links in this thread may no longer be 11c2d or relevant. Unfortunately that didn’t work – the driver pack expands onto disk, then says its ready to start the install, then instantly finishes, with no result. Do a System Restore.
